The Corporation

The Corporation includes interviews with 40 corporate insiders and critics - including Noam Chomsky, Naomi Klein, Milton Friedman, Howard Zinn, Vandana Shiva and Michael Moore - plus true confessions, case studies and strategies for change.

In law the corporation is a person. This film asks a simple but far-reaching question - what kind of person? Stockbrokers, market researchers, a corporate spy, as well as the usual suspects Noam Chomsky and Michael Moore are called as character witrnesses. Exhibit A is a checklist of the characteristics of a psychopath. The corporation ticks all the boxes. The corporate 'person', created by law for the public good, apparently has no guilt, a reckless disregard for the safety of others and is amoral. Based on a recent study of corporate law by Joel Bakan, it may be a first adaptation of a non-fiction book and effectively dramatises the argument while avoiding sentimentality. It avoids a simplistic anti-capitalist position, and includes a carpet manufacturer who reduced by a third the amount of finite resources his company used. He now lectures on sustainability - but the recent trend for companies to rebrand as green or ethical is critically examined too.

The film is based on the book The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power by Joel Bakan.
